Welcome Bonus: What to Check Before You Accept

A welcome bonus comes with terms that change what it is worth. Here is what to check first, which red flags to watch for, and why you can always play without a bonus.

A welcome bonus is an offer for new customers, usually extra money or free spins after a first deposit. It is a deal with conditions. This guide lists what to check before you click accept, and what to do if the terms do not suit you.

Why the terms matter

The UK Gambling Commission has said it is aware of welcome bonus offers and wagering requirements that may encourage excessive play. It has also flagged terms that are difficult to understand. In other words, the headline amount is the easy part to read and the conditions are the hard part. The headline is not the value of the offer.

What to check

Wagering

How many times must you bet before you can withdraw? Is it on the bonus alone, or on bonus plus deposit? Do the sum. For a 50 bonus at 35x on the bonus alone, the total is 35 x 50 = 1,750 of bets. Our guide to how to read wagering requirements shows the full working.

Expiry

How many days do you have? A short window can push you to bet faster than you wish. Divide the total bets by the days to see the daily amount.

Game weighting

Do all games count in full? Often slots count more than table games, and some games count for nothing. If you prefer roulette or blackjack, a low weighting can make the bonus very hard to finish.

Maximum cashout

Is there a limit on how much bonus winnings you can withdraw? A cap can make a large wagering target pointless.

Max bet

Is there a top bet size while the bonus is active? Going over it can lead to winnings being removed under some terms.

Minimum deposit

What do you need to deposit to qualify? Do not deposit more than you planned just to reach a tier.

Excluded payment methods

Some offers do not apply to certain payment methods. Check this before you deposit, not after.

Country rules

Offers and rules differ by country. A rule that protects players in one country may not exist in another. In Great Britain, the Commission has announced that from 19 January 2026 wagering on bonus winnings can be no more than 10 times, and that mixed-product promotions (for example betting and slots together) are banned. It also says players must be able to withdraw their own deposit balance at any time, even while a bonus is active. These are British rules. Check the law and the terms that apply where you live.

Can you decline it?

Many sites let you opt out at sign-up or before you deposit. Look for the option. If you cannot find it, ask support in writing and keep a copy of the answer.

Six things to tick off before you accept a bonus: amount, time limit, game rules, win cap, bet size and payment method.

Red flags

  • Key terms are hidden, very long, or hard to understand. The Commission expects significant conditions to be clear and prominent.
  • Your own deposit is locked until you finish the wagering.
  • The wagering is very high compared with the bonus size.
  • A very short expiry, or a very low maximum cashout.
  • Pressure wording such as "last chance" or timers that push you to deposit now.
  • Terms that change after you accept.
  • Support cannot or will not explain a condition.

If you see several of these, a "no" is a good answer. Take your time. An offer that is fair will still be fair after you have read it twice, and a good operator will not mind questions about it.

A quick way to compare two offers

Do not compare the headline amounts. Compare the total bets each offer needs, and the days you have to place them. An offer of 20 at 20x on the bonus needs 400 of bets (20 x 20). An offer of 100 at 40x on the bonus needs 4,000 of bets (100 x 40). The second bonus is five times bigger, but it asks for ten times more betting (4,000 / 400 = 10). Then ask which games count, what the maximum cashout is, and whether you would play that much anyway.

You can play without a bonus

You are never required to take a bonus. Playing without one means you play with your own money and keep simple rules. There is no wagering target, no bet cap from the offer and no expiry clock. Many players find this the calmer way to play. A bonus is optional, and the best answer is sometimes to decline.

How this connects to responsible gambling

A bonus can make it harder to stop. If you are chasing a wagering target, you may keep betting after you meant to quit. Decide your deposit limit and your time limit first. Do not raise them to finish a requirement. If a bonus is making you stake more, close the offer and take a break.

In short

  1. Read the terms before you accept, not after.
  2. Do the wagering sum: multiple x base amount.
  3. Check expiry, game weighting, max bet, max cashout and payment rules.
  4. Watch for red flags and decline if unsure.
  5. Remember that you can play without a bonus.

Play with care

Gambling is for adults aged 18 and over. It is entertainment, not income, and it can be addictive. Set limits, take breaks, and never gamble money you need for living costs. GambleAware offers free, confidential support for people in Great Britain. Look for a helpline in your own country too. Rules differ by country, so check the law where you live.
